What home insurance can cover
Owner or tenant, house or apartment, we keep what applies to you.
Fire and earthquake
The major risks for the building and its contents.
Burst pipes
A leak that damages your own home or the one below.
Theft
Burglary and theft of contents, with a separate declaration for valuables.
Liability
Damage you may cause to neighbours or third parties.
Your policy, in plain English
Four concepts that make the difference
Rebuilding value
The building is insured for what it costs to rebuild, not for the price you would sell it for.
Example: A 95 m² apartment may need, for example, €150,000 to rebuild, whatever its market price.
Underinsurance
If the sum insured is lower than the actual value, the claim payment is reduced proportionally.
Example: A home with a rebuilding value of €150,000 insured for €75,000, loss of €20,000: the payment may be €10,000.
Valuables
Jewellery, works of art and collections are covered only up to a limit, unless they are declared separately.
Example: A €5,000 piece of jewellery under a plan with a €1,500 valuables limit is paid up to €1,500.
Assignment to a bank
With a mortgage, the policy is assigned to the bank for the risks it requires.
Example: The bank requires fire and earthquake cover. We make sure your contents and your liability are covered too, which the bank doesn’t require.
Wherever you’re starting from
Insuring your home for the first time?
We need three pieces of information:
- How many square metres is it, which floor, and when was it built?
- Are you the owner or a tenant? Is there a mortgage?
- Do you have high-value items, such as jewellery or works of art?
We propose sums insured and covers, with examples of what would be paid in a loss.
Already have home insurance?
We check whether the sum insured keeps up with today’s construction costs, which have risen noticeably in recent years.
We also look at the covers that are often missing, such as earthquake, burst pipes and liability towards neighbours.
Home insurance FAQ
Does the building’s policy also cover my apartment?
It usually covers only the common areas, if the building is insured at all. Your apartment and its contents need their own insurance.
I’m a tenant. Do I need insurance?
Yes, for your contents and for your liability towards the owner and your neighbours, e.g. if a leak from your bathroom causes damage.
Is damage from rain coming in through a window covered?
It depends on the terms and on the cause. That’s why we explain from the start what the weather cover in your plan includes.
